Audition 2023



Sooraj Subramaniam (choreographer) in collaboration with Maghenta is seeking dancers who are proficient in the Odissi (Indian classical dance) style for the 2023 production of his latest work. The audition-workshop will take place in Bengaluru, India.

About the work
This is a contemporary work using the Odissi vocabulary, exploring spatial and rhythmic concepts in abstract as well as stylised ways, with emphasis on nritta.

Details of the audition-workshop
Where: Bengaluru, India
Dates: 21-25 January 2023, all days inclusive
Deadline for applications: 10 December 2022


Dancer requirements
We are looking for strong, creative performers who are able to explore organic, theatrical ways of moving within and around the Odissi vocabulary. 

Essential qualities:

  • Minimum age 18. 

  • Excellent Odissi technique, including proficiency working with rhythms.

  • Open and flexible to working with Odissi technique in abstract, unconventional ways.

  • Committed to working in a team.

  • Professional experience and improvisational skills definite advantage.

  • Dancers from all regions welcome but must be available to travel to Bengaluru for the January 2023 audition-workshop. 

 

Video requirements

  • Excerpt of yourself dancing during a rehearsal or performance.

  • Footage should clearly show your form and highlight your nritta skills. 

  • You may edit together sections from different performances. 

  • Maximum 5 minutes. 

  • Upload your video to an online platform such as YouTube, Vimeo, etc., and take note of the URL/link.

    - Full name & Date of birth
    - Confirm your availability to attend the Bengaluru audition 21-25 January 2023
    - URL link to your video

    Attach a copy of your CV/resume/biography

  4. Send application latest by 10 December 2022. 

 

After you apply

You will receive a confirmation email that your application has been received. All eligible applications will be reviewed, and a selection of artists will be finalised by late-December 2022 and invited to attend the audition in January 2023. 
Regretfully, if you have not been selected we cannot offer individual feedback. 

 

Audition format

Invited artists will be required to travel to Bengaluru for the in-person audition-workshop, which will take the shape of a research workshop consisting of 5 full days. Each day shall resemble a rehearsal day, which will include warming-up, movement research and development, and cool down, with adequate breaks in between. This will be an opportunity for us to get to know each others’ working styles.

A compensation
 shall be offered to help cover the cost of meals and accommodation.

During the audition we will discuss your further interest and availability: 

Creation/Rehearsals  - India, mid-year 2023 (5-6 weeks, dates TBC)

Production/Performance - Europe, winter 2023 (3-4 weeks, dates TBC)
